Prolotherapy, also called Regenerative Injection Therapy, is the injection to specific ligaments to help the body build more, stronger ligaments and stabilize joints. This procedure works by releasing growth factors and creating an inflammatory reaction on the ligaments, stimulating them to go through a process in which they develop more cells, called fibroblasts, and more tissue, called collagen, to increase the size and strength of the ligaments. With an increase in stability comes an increase in function in regards to exercise and activities. This improvement in a person’s ability to function can take a number of months to become evident.
Dr. David Musnick is a board-certified medical doctor at Functional Medicine of Idaho Eagle clinic and has over 20 years of experience in Prolotherapy. During Prolotherapy procedures, Dr. Musnick also helps stimulate the ligaments by range of motion exercises. When joints are more stable, this helps decrease joint degeneration, improving muscle function and helps tissues heal. In the majority of people, pain decreases as stability improves.
