Adverse food reactions are a major contributor to a long list of chronic health conditions, including (but not limited to) digestive problems, headaches, joint aches, skin irritations, eczema, asthma, low energy, depression, mood swings, weight gain, and more.

Many people suffer from these symptoms for long periods of time without realizing they may be caused by the foods they are eating. Often, a food or food category needs to be removed from the diet for a short period of time to confirm the connection between food and symptoms.

The Elimination Food Plan is a fundamental tool used in functional medicine. It is a 3 week (minimum) program that removes common foods that may be causing symptoms and, with proper reintroduction, helps patients identify the foods that may be triggering their symptoms. Reintroduction involves adding back one food at a time and observing whether that food is associated with negative symptoms.

The Elimination Food Plan:

  • Identifies food triggers
  • Reduces inflammation
  • Supports a healthy microbiome
  • Reduces overall toxic burden in the body
  • Emphasizes eating healing phytonutrients to the gut
  • Promotes body awareness to food

The Elimination Food Plan has 3 Steps:

Step 1: Eliminate inflammatory foods
Step 2: Reintroduce foods
Step 3: Monitor the body’s reactions and make a long term plan

Reintroduction Shared Medical Visit

Reintroduction involves adding back one food at a time and to observe whether it is associated with negative symptoms. For patients who have completed the elimination step of the Elimination Food Plan and are ready for the reintroduction step, we offer a Reintroduction Shared Medical Visit. During this class, patients will be given practical steps to help them successfully reintroduce foods into their diet and will learn how to look for food sensitivities and food intolerances.

Reintroduction is part 2 of 2 of a nutritional protocol, and is intended to be preceded by the Elimination Shared Medical Visit

What to Expect During This Shared Medical Visit

This half-hour shared medical visit with a functional nutritionist and other FMI patients will cover:

Shared Medical Visit FAQs

What is a shared medical visit?

Shared medical visits (SMVs) are hour-long sessions where patients are seen by a provider, nutritionist, or health coach in an educational, interactive, group setting. This improves patient access to care and educational resources, and has been linked to better patient outcomes.

How many people will be in my shared medical visit?

Shared medical visits can vary in size, but no more than 10 new patients will be in a session.

May I bring my spouse, kids, or friends to a shared medical visit?

Shared medical visits are group medical experiences designed specifically for functional medicine patients. All FMI patients are welcome to register for shared medical visits, but only patients who have registered will be admitted into the visit. Non-patients or patients who have not registered for this visit will not be allowed to attend.

Please do not share the Zoom link for any virtual shared medical visits. Every registered patient will receive an email directly with the Zoom link for the visit.

When does my insurance get billed?

Each visit will be billed to your insurance directly after you’ve completed it.

If you are a current patient and would like to sign-up for this Shared Medical Visit, please call our office at (208) 385-7711 or email us at
